ART CRITICISM
DESCRIPTION
The title of the artwork is fire spirit made in 1979 by Norval Morrisseau. All of the lines are thick except for some of the lines in the actual fire spirit. The lines are all curvy and rounded. Most of the painting is round or curvy. The entire painting has a smooth texture. It is red, blue, orange, yellow, black and grey. In the image there is a fire spirit and rocks underneath it.
ANALYSIS
The first thing you see is the fire spirit itself, it really pops because of all of the colours. It is asymmetrical as it is different on both sides. It is very flat and 2D. shapes and colours are repeated throughout the artwork.
INTERPRETATION
In the artwork it shows a fire spirit rising from what looks like rocks. The artist is not concerned with imitating nature nor is he concerned with expressing a feeling or emotion. He is concerned with lines, shapes, colours, etc.
JUDGMENT
I like the artwork. Personally I'm not really a philosophical artist and everything I draw is literal, so this artwork, having no clear "meaning" is something I really like. Also the spirit itself is very menacing and really cool looking.
